A careful checklist for used camera gear
What to inspect, record and ask about when a second-hand body or lens is part of the plan.
Confirm the exact item
Write down the model, mount, serial or stock reference where one is available, and the accessories that should be included. Similar names can hide important differences in sensor format, connector layout or regional supply.
Inspect the surfaces and controls
Look for damage around the mount, ports, hot shoe, battery door and screen. Check that dials, buttons, zoom or focus rings and the card door move as expected. Cosmetic wear is not automatically a problem, but it should be described honestly and priced consistently.
Ask for the history that matters
For a body, ask about shutter count when it is available, service history and any error messages. For a lens, ask about fungus, haze, impact, stiff rings and focus behaviour. Keep the answers with the order record so a future support conversation has context.
Check the policy before checkout
Confirm the condition grade, included accessories, warranty or return terms and the way a fault should be reported. If a listing leaves a material detail unclear, ask before paying rather than relying on an assumption about a used item.
